When a family camping trip takes a dark turn, how far will one mother go to keep her family safe?

Struggling with working-mother guilt, Marlene Greene hopes a camping trip in the forest will provide quality time with her three young children—until they see fires in the distance, columns of smoke distorting the sweeping view. Overnight, all communication with the outside world is lost.

Knowing something terrible has happened, Marlene suspects that the isolation of the remote campsite is all that’s protecting her family. But the arrival of a lost boy reveals they are not alone in the woods, and as the unfolding disaster ravages the land, more youngsters seek refuge under her wing. The lives of her own children aren’t the only ones at stake.

When their sanctuary is threatened, Marlene faces the mother of all dilemmas: Should she save her own kids or try to save them all?

NOW TO THE GOOD STUFF…HER SECRETS…

Say you have a secret stash of treats around the house. Where would it be and what would you hide?

I live in Singapore, where is it always 90℉ and 101% humidity, so any “secret stash” of sweet items would be carried off to the rainforest by a column of ants. My treats live in the fridge but, happily, the kids are too small to see up to my “mummy shelf” at the top.

What would be the perfect food and drink pairing for your book?

Anything from the stockpile of canned food hidden in the secret bunker in your back yard. If you’re not a survivalist, then S’mores would be ideal. Personally, being English, I would bring sandwiches and a Victoria Sponge. As a refreshment, my characters drink ready-mixed cans of Gin and Tonic. The ‘ready-mixed’ part is obviously a crime against humanity, but needs must in a dystopia.

Do you collect anything?

I travel a lot and collect items of ethnic clothing that never leave my wardrobe. I own Cameroonian beaded belts and Batak embroidered headscarves and a Peruvian poncho and a beautiful Hmong coat. Luckily, my daughter is willing to wear the glorious Laotian tribal skirts that I can’t resist buying: she looks fabulous in everything.

What’s one word your friends would use to describe you?

Marlene Greene, the main character in my novel, is a mama bear. I didn’t think I resembled her in any way, but a friend scoffed when I said that, so I guess ‘mama bear’ is one way to describe me.

Tell us one secret behind the writing of your latest book:

The same friend who called me ‘mama bear’ also inspired a character in the novel: Marlene’s sister-in-law, Joni Luff, who is an abundantly maternal woman. Joni has my friend’s fabulous hair and her Pennsylvania patter. But there’s also plenty of conflict between the two fictional mothers, plus I gave Joni a particularly tough dilemma! I emerged from the writing process to realise that my real-life friend might take offence, and I went into overdrive trying to explain how characters evolve to serve the narrative and take on a life of their own. I sent her the manuscript pre-publication, biting my nails that she would like it. Happily, she gave me a personal 5* review!
