Have you ever noticed that the more you start focusing on the good things that happen in your life, the less you notice the bad? Or the more you start complaining about things, the less you’re able to see the positive things?

I have.

It’s so easy to become negative, to let little negative comments and thoughts slip into your normal every day life. You grumble beneath your breath about the driver in front of you or the way your child seems to have forgotten how to wash dishes or even close the garbage lid. It doesn’t take much for an avalanche to begin when it comes to negativity.

It has to be the same for positivity, right? I hope so, because between you and me, I’m tired of always being negative.

One of the things I really want to work on this year is changing my perspective. I want to be a better person, a different person, someone who doesn’t see all the negative around her – or maybe sees it but has chosen not to focus on it. It’s not easy and I keep going back to my old ways of thinking and feeling but if I focus on this day by day…that’s my goal at least.

I started a gratitude journal this year. No, I don’t write in it daily because I often forget, but I do write in it. I put down the things I’m thankful for – like my dad making me coffee, like being driven to the airport, like having friends who are able to be honest with me, like being in a state with sun instead of a province full of cold.

I need to start focusing on the positive things that are happening in my life, no matter how small or inconsequential they may seem because the more I see the good things, the less I’ll focus on the bad.

I want to be a happy, cheerful person that others want to be around – don’t you?

Not only am I journalling my own gratitudes, in my awesome reader group on Facebook, we’re going to start sharing our daily gratitudes as well. Every day, even if it’s only one thing that has happened, one thing we can see as positive…we’re going to share it with each other.
