I have the absolute pleasure of hosting Lisa today. She shares our story of how we met, but I have to add in one little piece. From the moment I published Finding Emma I have received hundreds of emails from families who have experienced similar loss through abduction. My heart breaks every time I read the stories and get to know the families. It has been an honor to read each and every email and to get to know some wonderful people – like Lisa. It is also because of stories like Lisa’s that I will continue to donate proceeds from every paperback copy of Finding Emma to www.mcsc.ca – The Missing Children’s Society of Canada.
A heartfelt hello to all of you! It is a pleasure to guest blog today. I “met” Steena last year after reading Finding Emma. If you haven’t read this book, I highly suggest it because the sequel Emma’s Secret will be released soon. I know I’m counting the days to learn more about this kidnapping and the families affected.
It’s actually Finding Emma’s subject matter and how well written the book was written that motivated me to contact its author, the wonderful Steena Holmes. I emailed Steena to express my appreciation and awe for her ability to write such an emotional, mysterious, and true-to-life book. Thankfully, Steena hasn’t lost a loved one to kidnapping, yet her characters expressed feelings too real at times. I didn’t expect to hear back from her but felt it was important for her to know the impact her book had on my mother and me.
Not only did Steena reply but we have remained connected via email, Facebook, and our blogs. I love the doors God opens for us. I live on the Eastern Coast of the United States in Upstate New York with my husband and teen daughter. When I am not writing or speaking, I work as a teacher’s assistant at the local elementary school. I used to say, “I moonlight as a writer and speaker” but in the past year I learned to juggle two full-time careers while keeping my role as wife, mother, and daughter the first priority.
What do I write? Great question! I prefer to write nonfiction and my first book, Where’s Heidi? One Sister’s Journey will be released on April 3, 2013. You are invited to join me on a journey no one ever expects to take – a journey through abduction and the loss of hope, family, and faith. With a soft and comforting tone, I write to the sibling left to deal with the stress and grief experienced when their brother or sister is tragically taken from their lives. Through my experience, you will recognize similar emotions with new or renewing perspective; you aren’t alone, someone else understands, and there is hope to get through with joy.
It took me years to realize I was not alone, and only through expressing my feelings would I being to heal. Where’s Heidi? One Sister’s Journey is written to release the brother or sister trapped within themselves “going through the motions” of life from unneeded years of pain and loneliness. Instead it will consume the reader with the trust required to survive losing one’s brother or sister and the true source of strength and hope to endure each day of not knowing through a relationship with Jesus.
The book transitions from the day Heidi disappeared to the present, with highlights of the events, people and experiences I thought insignificant at the time, yet proved to be evidence of God’s working in my life. My book reveals abduction from a sister’s perspective to encourage and open communication between the reader and their family through intense yet comforting personal reflections.
I spent a decade searching for something to fill the void left from my sister’s absence yet nothing could. Thanks to one child’s boldness I learned what I needed, Jesus. Where’s Heidi? One Sister’s Journey, an inspirational nonfiction written to encourage the hurting with the truth I experienced in my life. My hope and prayer is to help others by sharing my story.
Thank you again for the warm welcome today as a guest blogger Steena!
About the Author:
Lisa M. Buske’s sister, Heidi M. Allen was kidnapped on April 3, 1994 never to be seen or heard from again. God has taken a tragic instance of her life and transformed it into a life-saving occurrence. She writes with passion and out of obedience for the God who saved her knowing others need to hear her story. Lisa’s relationship with Jesus opened the door to a hope and healing she didn’t think was possible.
Lisa’s husband, Ed, daughter, Mary, and her parents serve as Lisa’s team as she writes and speaks. Lisa’s faith in God and dedication to family motivate and inspire her to do and be the best woman, wife, mother, and sister she can be. Her life proves it is possible to survive when God is part of the equation.
In addition to writing and speaking, Lisa works as a teacher’s assistant for her local school district and serves at different capacities within her church.
In 1994, my only sister was abducted while working alone at a local convenience store. The book opens with an early morning phone call then details the emotions, grief, and confusion felt in those first moments while transitioning through the days, months, and years to follow.
A sibling’s journey is different from that of a parent. Our role and feelings cannot compare yet they are just as important. Parents experience the greatest loss of their lives through the loss of their child. The emotional loss of the missing
child’s siblings, has a similar and traumatic effect in their lives too.
I lost more than my sister on April 3, 1994 I lost my faith. Thanks to the bold faith of one child I have hope and a story to share. There is no one person or thing here on earth to replace Heidi or the friendship we had together yet after ten years of searching, I realized there is Someone who can, God.
“Mrs. Buske, you need Jesus.” Words that changed my life for the better.
My name is Lisa M. Buske and Heidi Allen is my sister. She remains missing but never forgotten. Our journeys after loss may vary yet the pain, grief, and need for hope are similar. This is my story of discovery, healing, and hope from the moment I learn of Heidi’s kidnapping until today.
Life after loss is a rollercoaster ride of memories and emotions.
Will you take this ride with me?
