I live in the land of snow. It’s been 8 years since we moved here and you’d think I’d be used to it by now. But I’m not. I fight winter all year long…when it snows in July I moan and complain, when the snow lasts until June I weep uncontrollably and when it hits us hard in October and just get down right frigid. SNOW is a 4-letter word in my household and I withhold chocolate from my children when they taunt me as they bundle up to build snow castles and snow families.

(You think I’m exaggerating but I promise you, I’m not.  Well….maybe a smidgen…)

Over the course of 24 hrs Old Man Winter decided to dump over 20 cm of snow in my city. So nice of him. I loved spending 3 hrs in the car while driving my daughter to police cadets – a trip that normally takes less than 1 hr there and back. (yes…I’m grumblling…)

So, what do I do to combat the freezing temperature outside? Other than cover myself with sweaters, wool socks, fingerless mitts and make an abundance of hand knitted blankets? Why, I make hot cocoa, of course 🙂

I stumbled across a new recipe today for peppermint mocha. I tried the one at McDonalds and could only sip at it before I threw it out. Homemade is always better. And since it’s almost Christmas and candy canes and all their wonderful assorted flavours are out in stores … this is the perfect time to try a new recipe! I found this one over at Clumbsy Cookie … a new site for me and while her’s looks amazing … it’s too complicated for me to make when my fingers are half frozen and can barely hold a straw. So…here’s my Simply Sweet Steena Version (I think I’ll have to do more of these versions for you…so we can all share in my chocolate cravings):


~Heap 3-4 large tablespoons for your favorite cocoa mix into your cup. Preferably NOT a flavored mix.
~Grind up 4-6 candy canes. You can use the old fashioned ones or try one of the new flavored ones out there. It’s your choice 🙂
(wait…you’re wondering how to grind? If you have a coffee grinder, you can use that, a food processor works just fine too…and if
you’re smart, you’ll grind up a LOT of candycanes at once and put the powder in a container to use for another sweet cup!)
~Heap 2-3 tablespoons of the powdered candy canes to your cocoa mix.
~Fill your mug up either 1/2 or 3/4 of the way with hot coffee. I just bought a Keurig so that is super easy for me now!!
~Still vigorously (if you can…cause you know, your fingers are now just slightly warming up)
~Add milk or cream or even whipped cream to the top of your mug.
~If you have any candy canes left over … pop one into the delicious hot liquid and lick it every so often!
