Summer is the best time of the year. Sure, there are tons of mosquitos and bugs – way too many bees flying around for my liking – and the sun can get too hot … but there’s cotton candy, root beer floats, hot fudge sundaes and ice cream cones. There’s laughter, water fights, sun tan lotion and beach balls. Don’t forget the sizzling steaks and hot dogs, watermelon and iced cold lemonade.

I love the laziness of summer. Staying up late, sleeping, reading until my eyes go crossed, laying out in the sun…doing absolutely nothing for as long as I’m able to.

For me, summer is also when I allow myself to be the most creative. It’s like there’s a switch on my brain that says “you can let go”. I love it. It’s only the 5th – but I’ve redesigned, I created, I put out a new novella – Sanctuary – and I’ll have another one ready in a few days under my pen name. I’m in the middle of writing Emma’s Secret and I swear I’ve emptied out the chocolate cupboard while working on covers! But … I’m happy! I’m going away for a writing weekend, I’ve got a new story percolating in my head and I can’t wait to see what all this summer holds!

With my kids – we went to see the Canada Day fireworks in Calgary for the first time, we’ve had an enormous amount of ice cream, we’ve gone swimming, we’ll go bowling, camping, bike riding, roller coaster riding – basically,  we’ll spend this summer being ‘active’. I have to admit – I’m really excited about spending the summer with my kids. Even with two on their iPods and one watching netflix … we’re spending time together and doing things. I feel like I’m going to get to know my daughter’s this summer and I’m excited.

What about you? Are you enjoying your summer so far? What do you have planned?
